Type Locality and Naming

Metangula Basin (Mozambique). A formal lithostratigraphic unit recognized within the Karoo-aged Metangula Basin, which straddles the border between Mozambique and Tanzania. Middle Formation in Beaufort Gr in Metangula Basin (Mozambique)

Lithology and Thickness

Composed of a terrestrial clastic sequence consisting of sandstones, siltstones, and mudstones, closely associated with the basin's lower sedimentary layers.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Overlies the basal units (such as the Fubue Fm or Monte Lilonga Fm) in the Metangula Basin sequence.

Upper contact

Conformably overlain by the Moola Fm

Regional extent

Geographically restricted to the Metangula Basin in northern Mozambique. Correlates with the lower-to-middle Ecca Gr equivalents (such as coal-bearing measure units or post-glacial transition beds) within the eastern African rift basins.
